PHEV charging

When it comes to PHEV charging, the process is easier than you might think. Here at Toyota Chula Vista, we believe all drivers should have access to fuel-efficient and low-impact vehicles, like hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV models. That’s why we’re sharing all the information you need to charge, drive, and care for your plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Can I Charge My PHEV at Home?

A PHEV, or plug-in hybrid vehicle, is the mid-way point between a hybrid model and a fully electric car. It uses a combination of power sources, including both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor and battery configuration. That helps to reduce your environmental impact and saves money on fuel.

Another benefit of a PHEV is that you can charge it right at home. Here’s a look at the different charging levels and your best options for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging is almost exclusively reserved for PHEVs. That’s because it has a very low voltage and takes a long time to charge, which works well with the smaller batteries in plug-in hybrid vehicles, rather than the larger ones in electric cars. The outlets already in your home support Level 1 charging, so you don’t need to worry about installation.

Level 2 Charging

If you want to take your PHEV charging to the next level, consider having a Level 2 charging station professionally installed in your home.  You can receive subsidies for charger installation, which help reduce costs. Level 2 charging is faster than Level 1, so you can charge for daily driving with ease.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging is the highest voltage charging option. In fact, the voltage is too high for residential homes, which is why Level 3 charging is only available at public stations. It’s also too high for most plug-in hybrid vehicles and should be used only for electric cars.
