History of the Toyota Land Cruiser

May 15th, 2024 by

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is just the latest model in this long-running off-road-ready SUV. As the longest-running Toyota model still in production, this vehicle has gone through several iterations over its 73-year history. Courtesy of Toyota Chula Vista, we’ve assembled the complete history of the Toyota Land Cruiser.

1951: A Classic Model Is Born

The manufacturer first produced the Toyota Land Cruiser in 1951 in response to a desire for a heavy-duty vehicle. While its production was initially limited to military applications, the model was soon given a revamp with street-friendly trim levels and options.

1967: Switching Styles

One of the more unique design elements of the Toyota Land Cruiser is how it’s built with numerous frames and body styles in mind. In 1967, Toyota launched the first station wagon variant of this model, one of the first of its kind on the market. The four-door model featured a standard 3.9-liter engine and an electronically controlled tailgate.

1990: The Prado Trim

The third model type introduced on the Toyota Land Cruiser is the light-duty variant. Also known as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, this model shrunk the body size with a redesigned grille and engine hood. Originally capable of 95 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque with its diesel engine, this model has both two-door and four-door models available.

2023: The Latest Generation

Finally, we arrive at the present with the most recent generation. It started off with the 2024 model, with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain generating 326 net horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.
