The Toyota Land Cruiser was launched in 1951 as a military-type sports utility vehicle. After slowly gaining popularity, the original model was replaced in 1960 with the 40 Series Toyota Land Cruiser. This model was built for conquering off-road terrain, with low-range gearing and two doors. The model grew larger in the 1970s and ‘80s and became more family-friendly. The most recent iteration of the Toyota Land Cruiser was an eight-seat luxury SUV with a potent V8 engine.

Rebooting a Classic Off-Road SUV

The Toyota Land Cruiser was discontinued following the 2021 model year but will triumphantly return to the market in 2024. While the only official news so far is that the SUV will be returning, we expect the same classic capability updated with a smaller footprint and an extensive roster of advanced technology. Credible sources suggest that the most likely powertrain is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine making somewhere in the ballpark of 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
