Fuel-efficient vehicles and Toyota electric cars have never been more popular at Toyota Chula Vista, and many of our customers have one question on their mind: “Which is best for me – hybrid, PHEV, or electric?” Let’s take a closer look at each.

Hybrids

Toyota hybrid models typically combine a gasoline engine, at least one electric motor, and a battery pack. The electric motor supplements the gas engine, allowing it to shut off at low speeds and while coasting.

Meanwhile, regenerative braking recaptures energy and uses it to recharge the battery pack. Hybrid cars drive like combustion-engine cars, and owners don’t need to worry about plugging in their hybrid vehicle to recharge it.

PHEVs

Plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs) fall in-between a traditional hybrid and a full electric vehicle (EV). A PHEV car at our local Toyota dealership can run on electric power alone before switching to the gas engine.

This system promotes efficient driving in stop-and-go conditions, while the gas engine is a real boon on the highway. PHEVs have a larger battery than regular hybrids, so they can be driven farther and more often on electric power. As with regular hybrids, regenerative braking can extend the battery’s range.

Electric Vehicles

Of the three car types covered here, electric cars are the most efficient, offering an all-electric driving range of up to 300 miles before needing a charge. These cars, like the other variations we’ve discussed, are very desirable for Toyota financing. However, the longer the distance you want to drive, the more planning you’ll need to do regarding where to charge the car along the way.

EVs feature electric motors that are powered by large battery packs. There is no combustion engine and no conventional transmission. Many electric cars can reach a full charge in less than an hour at a DC fast charging station.
