Toyota Care 101: the Difference between the Drivetrain and the Powertrain

Toyota Service

Understanding the inner workings of your Toyota car can be a bit bewildering. For example, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the terms ‘powertrain’ and ‘drivetrain’ before, but you might not know what they mean and which Toyota parts are included in each. Understanding the difference between the two — and a helping hand from our Toyota technicians — ensures that you get more from your car.

What is the Powertrain?

Every pre-owned and new Toyota car at our local Toyota dealership has a powertrain. If you think of a vehicle in terms of the human body, then the bones would be the structural parts, and the powertrain would be the muscles and tendons – in other words, the components that enable the structural stuff to move. These components include the engine, transmission, axles, and wheels. The engine produces the power, and the supporting parts convert it to motion.

What is the Drivetrain?

The drivetrain is very similar to the powertrain, and most of the parts in the drivetrain are also included in the powertrain. These parts include the transmission, differential, axles, wheels, CV joints, and driveshaft. All of these parts work together to put the car in motion. The components comprising the drivetrain literally “drive” the vehicle forward.

The most significant difference between the drivetrain and the powertrain is that the drivetrain doesn’t include the engine, whereas the powertrain does. Another way to look at this is that the drivetrain consists of everything that comes after the engine – in other words, after the “power” is generated. So when you bring your car in for Toyota service and hear one of our service advisors or technicians refer to a drivetrain inspection or repair, you’ll know that the examination won’t include the engine.
