A Brief History of the Toyota Crown
The Toyota Crown is returning to the United States for the 2023 model year. If you’re a car enthusiast or a longtime fan of the Toyota brand, you likely already know the significance of this announcement. The team at Toyota Chula Vista is happy to share a brief history of this groundbreaking luxury Toyota sedan for our younger customers.
Beginnings
The Toyota Crown debuted in Japan in 1955 as an upscale midsize sedan. The automaker was known as Toyopet at the time, and the Toyopet Crown featured a 48-horsepower 1.5-liter Type R engine.
With innovations like rear-hinged rear doors, the Toyota Crown was a groundbreaking vehicle that helped jumpstart the Japanese automotive industry, which was struggling to keep up with Western automakers at the time. The model was first shipped to the United States for sale in 1958.
Second-Generation
In 1962, the second generation of the Toyota Crown made its debut. It featured a modern look, including a flat-deck body style then popular in American cars.
The original transmission was replaced by an upgraded, fully-automatic transmission in 1963. Around this time, a sportier S model of the Crown debuted and featured a four-speed manual transmission, a floor shifter, and servo-assisted disc brakes.
Modern Versions
Even though it was last sold in the United States fifty years ago, the Toyota Crown has remained one of the most popular Toyota sedans through the decades. Besides being one of Japan’s most popular passenger cars, it’s also seen service among government agencies, limousine services, and police departments.
