The Toyota Prius has a number of firsts to its name, including the first commercially viable hybrid car, first-in-its-class fuel economy, and the first car most of us think of when we think “hybrid.” More than two decades after its launch, it’s still the benchmark against which new Toyota hybrids — and the rest of the industry’s, too — are measured. Here’s why Toyota Chula Vista finds this year’s model the best yet.
The 2018 Toyota Prius rolls into a new model year with minimal changes (see “Safety and Special Features” for what’s new). That isn’t a bad thing; it’s settling into a comfortable maturity, having hit its stylistic stride and having found a driving dynamic that’s miles away from what it offered when it debuted.
The same trim levels (Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring) are back from last year, as is the powertrain. Don’t let the horsepower numbers fool you; the use of lightweight materials, the improved suspension, and the great handling ensure that even though this isn’t a hot hatchback, it’s still surprisingly nimble.
Before we dive into new features, let’s start with another important carryover from last year: safety ratings. Once again, the Toyota Prius earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus and an NHTSA five-star rating.
As for new features: Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) joins the Toyota STAR safety system as standard equipment. The upper trim levels get a whole raft of amazing tech, including a new 11.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, available Intelligent Park Assist, an optional power tilt/slide moonroof, JBL audio system, and much more (your Toyota dealer serving San Diego will give you more details).
Once a lonely innovator, the Toyota Prius now presides over a line of new Toyota models that includes the Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota Prius V, Toyota Prius C, and hybrid versions of other popular Toyota models, like the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Visit Toyota Chula Vista at 650 Main St to see them all and pick which you’d like to test drive!
